Capacity Development Strategies to Support Decentralization in Asia

Exchanging knowledge from the region and beyond

An important objective of The Power of How initiative in Asia has been the gathering and sharing of evidence on the “state of play” of local capacity development in the region. This evidence base has been collected with a view to supporting the argument that capacity development cannot be ignored if the MDGs are to be achieved. It also provides a baseline of information on how local capacity development is being undertaken in the region: how are capacity development activities defined? What level of resources are being spent, and by whom? What capacity development approaches have worked and not worked?

This following resources, a mix of both print and audio-visual media, represent a culmination of this process of evidence gathering and analysis undertaken through the UNDP and SNV capacity development initiative beginning in 2006 in the Asia region.

This process of gathering, collating, analyzing and sharing knowledge on capacity development has taken place through regional learning events; desk research; specific country initiatives and pilots; field research in select countries; video interviews; and the production of a documentary film illustrating the process and impact of local capacity development in several Asian countries.

While far from exhaustive, it is hoped that this compendium of resources will further the learning, debate, and dialogue on CD and will be of benefit to a wide audience that includes stakeholders, policymakers, government and civil society partners, international partners, and development practitioners.
